At HFSI, we understand that fire safety training and certification requirements can sometimes feel overwhelming. To help clarify the process, we’ve compiled answers to the most common questions about LA City Fire Cards, training, and compliance. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, facility manager, or new employee, this guide will address your fire safety questions and ensure you’re prepared to meet fire safety USA standards.

1. What is a Fire Card, and Why Do I Need It?

A Fire Card (officially called a Fire Life Safety Certificate) is a certification issued by the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD). It verifies that you’ve completed mandatory training to respond effectively to fire emergencies in healthcare settings. If you work in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, retirement home, or psychiatric center, this certification is legally required. Without it, your employer could face penalties, and you may not be permitted to work.

2. What’s the Difference Between a Blue Fire Card and a Pink Fire Card?

Blue certificate with text: Los Angeles City Fire Department, Hospital Fire and Life Safety Training. Includes sections for instructor, fitness number, and expiration date. aka blue fire card

Blue Fire Card:

  • Required for hospital employees.

  • Valid for 4 years.

  • Mandates 6 hours of training (officially), but HFSI condenses this into a 4-hour course.

Pink certificate with la-hfsi.com at the top, issued by the Los Angeles City Fire Department for completing fire safety training. "SAMPLE" is overlaid. aka pink card

Pink Fire Card:

  • Required for staff at skilled nursing facilities, retirement homes, and psychiatric hospitals.

  • Valid for 2 years.

  • Typically requires 3 hours of training, but HFSI includes it in the same 4-hour session as the Blue Card.

Pro Tip: At HFSI, you’ll receive both cards for attending just one class!

3. How Long Does the Training Take?

While the LAFD officially requires 6 hours for Blue Cards and 3 hours for Pink Cards, HFSI’s expert instructors deliver the same critical content in a streamlined 4-hour session. Our engaging, no-fluff approach saves you time without compromising quality.

4. Can I Take the Training Online?
